Bushfire season and pets: parasite protection and go-bag tips

    Introduction

Bushfire season is stressful. Pets may relocate, stay with friends, or visit boarding. Parasite routines often slip during these times. A small plan keeps protection steady while you focus on safety. Prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

    Prep your evacuation go-bag

    • Current product packs in the right weight band

    • A written dosing date and your vet’s contact details

    • Tick tool or fine-tipped tweezers

    • Spare collar with ID tag, lead, and a few days of food

    • Copies of vaccination and microchip records

    Dosing when plans change

    • If you evacuate, dose on schedule the day you leave or the day you arrive

    • Set a phone reminder and take a photo of each dose given

    • Treat every pet in the household or temporary home

Tick and flea checks during smoke and heat

    • Short daily hands-on check: lips, ear edges, under collar, armpits, groin, between toes, tail base

    • Keep bedding dry and clean to help skin stay comfortable

    • In shelter or boarding, ask staff what tick checks they perform

    Boarding and staying with friends

    • Send your pet’s product, written due date, and weight band

    • Confirm if other pets in the home are on prevention

    • Pack the next dose if the due date falls during the stay

    Products we trust

    Safety basics

    • Species matters. Never use a dog product on a cat

    • Match current weight band and minimum age

    • Do not stack preventatives unless your vet advises

    • Ask your vet before dosing if your pet is unwell or on other medicines

    FAQ

If I miss a dose during an evacuation, what should I do
Give it as soon as you remember and reset your reminder from that date. If you missed heartworm prevention for your dog, ask your vet about testing before you restart. For help rebuilding a simple schedule after a disrupted month, contact us.
