Why daily checks matter
Paralysis ticks can make pets very sick. A fast hands-on check each day in tick season helps you find and remove ticks early. Keep using prevention as well. Checks do not replace prevention.
Before you start
Good light and calm handling.
Run fingertips slowly over the skin, not just the coat.
Have a tick remover or fine tweezers ready.
Keep a small bag or container for the tick you remove.
The 60-second nose-to-tail routine
Nose and muzzle. Feel around lips, whisker pads and under the chin.
Eyes and cheeks. Check eyelids, brows and the fold where the ear meets the head.
Ears. Look inside and behind each ear.
Neck and collar line. Part the coat right under the collar.
Chest and front legs. Feel the armpits and between the toes.
Belly and groin. Slide fingers gently over thin-haired areas.
Back, tail base and under the tail.
Back legs and between toes again.
Take off collars or harnesses so you can see the skin underneath.
If you find a tick
Remove it promptly with a tick remover or fine tweezers held close to the skin.
Pull straight out with steady pressure.
Keep the tick in a bag or container for your vet if needed.
Watch your pet for wobbliness, vomiting, a change in voice or breathing. If you see any of these, contact a vet at once.
Protection that helps reduce risk
Use prevention on time, every time, and keep doing daily checks in season.
Dogs, monthly flea and tick chew: Nexgard chewables for dogs.
Dogs, long-acting flea and tick chew: Bravecto chew for dogs.
Cats, broad monthly spot-on with tick cover: Revolution Plus spot-on for cats.
Cats, long-acting flea and tick spot-on: Bravecto spot-on for cats.
Simple safety tips
Weigh your pet and choose the correct pack each time.
Use dog products on dogs only. Never use dog products on cats.
Do not combine treatments unless your vet advises it.
Keep spot-ons away from children and other pets until dry.
Read the label every time and set phone reminders so you do not miss a dose.
FAQ
How often should I do tick checks
Daily in tick season and after trips to bush or coastal areas. Keep using prevention as directed.
Do short-haired pets still need checks
Yes. Ticks can attach anywhere, even on very short coats.
Can bathing remove a tick
No. You still need to remove the tick with a tick remover or tweezers. Follow with a vet check if your pet seems unwell.
Should I still check if I use prevention
Yes. Prevention lowers risk but does not replace daily hands-on checks in high-risk times and places.
