Coastal holiday homes: parasite guide for Aussie pets

    Introduction

Coastal stays raise tick, flea and mosquito exposure. Holiday houses can also harbour leftover flea stages from previous pets. Use this quick plan to keep protection steady while you relax.

    Before you go

    • Dose a few days early so protection is active

    • Pack the next dose, a tick tool and your vet’s number

    • Check weight and pick the correct band

    • Ask a local clinic about current tick risk

    On arrival

    • Vacuum rugs and soft furnishings, then empty the vacuum outside

    • Wash pet bedding on hot and dry well

    • Sweep decks and check under outdoor furniture for leaf litter

    Daily coastal habits

    • Evening tick check after beach or bush tracks: lips, ear edges, under collar, armpits, groin, between toes, tail base

    • Rinse sand and salt off coats and paws

    • Keep food bowls and bins sealed to deter wildlife visitors

    Safe tick removal

Grip close to the skin with a tick tool or fine-tipped tweezers. Lift straight out with steady pressure. Keep the tick in a sealed container and watch your pet for 24 to 48 hours.

    Coming home

Keep weekly vacuuming and hot washes going for three months if you saw fleas. Reset reminders to your home schedule.
