Backyards can hide flea eggs, ticks and mosquito breeding spots. A few routine habits keep pets comfortable year-round. This guide was prepared with input from our lead vet and founder, Dr. Feargus McConnell, BVSc.

Where parasites hide in suburbs

• Long grass, leaf litter and dense shrubs

• Under decks and along fence lines used by wildlife

• Sandpits, garden beds and mulch piles

Backyard checklist (monthly)

• Mow and edge paths so tick checks are easy

• Rake leaf litter and thin dense shrubs

• Cover sandpits when not in use

• Tip out standing water and scrub bowls and saucers

• Seal gaps under fences to reduce roaming wildlife

House routine that helps

Vacuum rugs and sofa seams, then empty the vacuum outside. Hot wash pet bedding and favourite blankets. Keep this up for three months if fleas were seen.

Daily habits in tick areas

Quick hands-on check after evening walks: lips, ear edges, under the collar, armpits, groin, between toes, tail base.

Dosing rhythm

Pick one dose day for every pet. If you use long-acting products, add a mid-interval reminder. Treat all pets on the same day so you do not leave gaps.
